Here’s some monotypes and decalcomania portraits I made while @studio459tomar a few weeks ago. There’s some shots with HerNie guts around the studio too.

Research includes; Paul Klee hand puppets made for his son, @royalacademyarts anatomy collection & Andreas Vesalius 16th century anatomist drawings, Mine and my Nan’s ongoing animal ornament collection, Surrealist painting and making techniques (exquisite corpse, decalcomania), Mariam Cahn’s haunting figures, caves.

Jennifer Desborough 1939 - 2025, our rock, our matriarch - my beautiful Nan, the backbone of our family. To be in your company was to feel love and guaranteed laughter.

An avid cuddler who would pull out her yoga moves in the middle of the dance floor, the charity shop queen, known as ‘the colourful lady’ in Stevenage whose style and flirting skills were unmatched - it was a privilege to have known you and to love and been loved by you. It’s heartbreaking to imagine not holding you again or hearing your giggle. The sweetness and the mischief, that will live through so many. Our Nanny. Our refuge. xxx sweet dreams - until we meet again - running down sand dunes together xxx

I was part of a podcast called “Classed Acts” where I talk about having a job at 13, the smoke and mirrors of the art world and middle class people assimilating your culture while gatekeeping opportunities for their mates. So great to speak with @jamie_holman_studio - really enjoyed getting to know him and his work - check it out ✨

Dr Sarah Scarsbrook and Dr Dani Child talk with invited guests about life as a creative/educator coming from working class origins. It’s available on Spotify - link in bio 🙌🏼

We are joined by performance artist and educator Lolly Adams @lollyadams , and Fine Art course leader and co-founder of Uncultured Creatives @uncultured_creatives Jamie Holman @jamie_holman_studio on working harder and working longer to make it, or just keep making, as a visual artist. We discuss putting art making on hold to earn a living, establishing secure work, and Arts Council England’s class-driven board and funding platforms. The middle-class colonisation of working-class spaces, and a middle-class gaze upon working class culture that is either assimilated, mocked, or deemed improvable are explored.

The Rio Cinema founder presents a night of art films, live music and queer performance, to celebrate Spring’s renewing desires and disasters, get some tips from the ecosex manifesto, and listen in the deep of our awakening bodies.
Selected films will show the connection between queer plants and queer people, pushing the boundaries of sexuality and love to incorporate the natural world.

Film artists: Zheng Bo (Pteridophilia), Valentin Ranger, Lolly Adams, Autojektor, Edd Carr, Elisabetta Antonucci and more artists to come.

PROGRAMME:

7-8 PM PRE-SHOW (Foyer, Circle, Ludski Bar)
Special performance by Andrew Woodyatt (Pink Palace), dedicated to the cult documentary GREY GARDENS, and sound performance by Rosa (Dream Emulator). Inspired by the practices of worm grunting, a folk method for drawing worms out from the soil to be captured, we will call into the soil using bass frequencies, both tilling and calling the soil forth. Through concrete and lead piping, a 45hz song will be heard by the depths.

Insuﬀerably Sweet oﬀers various extractions from eleven artists’ from the class of 2026, who have now completed their first year at the RA Schools. The Bolster Playground (2024) is a series of 50, 29 x 21 cm archival pigment prints of a collage depicting a construction of upright hands supporting connecting dark grey lines with coloured objects flopped over them.

The Bolster Playground artworks (2019 - ongoing) expand into installation, movement, workshops and exhibitions which are rooted in collaboration. The project was conceived for an Alternative Art School Weekender festival that I organised in 2019 with @theotherma hosted by @weareuglyduck

The weekender bought together over 15 alternative art schools and self organised collectives to build our network, share skills and discuss art education, accessibility, socially engaged projects, alternative spaces, gentrification and how working in alternative ways might create a different art world.

“I first met Lolly Adams at a performance club night in Bethnal Green called Deep Trash: Ecotrash, in 2019. She was appearing as Miss HerNia: the fetid progeny of a colossal ‘fatberg’ created from discarded cooking oil, fat, nappies and wet wipes. What I expected to be an oozing abomination turned out to be something even more delightful: a filigreed materialisation of rot.
Miss HerNia (page 8) is one of Adams’s
many alter egos, which often explore over- consumption. She also performs as Bin Bag Girl, a character inspired by the hoarding of a close family relative, and tap dances across
the stage inside a bin liner until a big burlesque reveal finds her exploding from within. Or take Hairy Meatball, which rolls through a sewer, picking up detritus along the way; it appears alongside other irregular characters in a 3-D animated piece called Grandad’s Tooth, currently in progress (above left), which codifies biological defects in a monstrous defamation of the beauty myth. And then there’s Show Pony, who sports a muzzle and ponytail while jogging on a treadmill, her body pinioned with innumerable equestrian rosettes. Her incessant drive to move forwards, yet without going anywhere, stages the bedrock of capitalism: the extraction and accumulation of value from a labour force lured by its products.
Adams invites us to question the standards against which femininity is identified and judged. The abject pleasures of her work also invite us to consider cycles of excessive productivity and consumption, and how conventions of taste and social acceptability come to be established. By transgressing these conventions, she opens a door to the prospect of their demise, along with those forces – capitalist patriarchy, especially – that perpetuate their dominance.

À l’occasion de la Nuit européenne des musées, le Capc propose une soirée costumée légèrement débridée ! Vous êtes invités à arborer vos plus beaux pyjamas, costumes et autres créations pour célébrer le PYJAMABAL. 🤸‍♀️ Une soirée pyjama à l’échelle de tout le bâtiment, qui oscillera entre rêve (première partie de soirée) et cauchemar (deuxième partie de soirée). In this room are works by all thirty-two current students @royalacademyschools – an exhibition marking the reopening of newly restored spaces that house the three year postgraduate programme.

Here, we see a fragment of the complex ecosystem of the studios: a cabinet of many works and propositions. Visual and conceptual connections are neither directed nor purely accidental – they occur because of conversations that happen when works are developed and realised in close physical and psychic proximity.

Originally an artists’ workspace, the Weston Studio has become a gallery for the Royal Academy Schools in which to stage experimental shows of new projects and ideas - both resolved and ones that have not yet reached a conclusion.
