A self-portrait bust cast in lard is struck by a mechanical paddle each time someone enters the space. Made from a waste product of the meat industry, the lard is poured into a mould and frozen until it resembles marble, bringing together a material associated with excess and disposal with the conventions of monumental sculpture. Replacement lard busts and silicone moulds are stored in a domestic fridge alongside the installation, making visible the practical cycle of casting, freezing and replacement that sustains the work. Through repeated acts of making and striking, the sculpture draws together monument and waste, preservation and decay, spectacle and self-punishment.
